Galashiels is a town in the Scottish Borders, located in the valley of the Gala Water, a tributary of the River Tweed. It has a rich history, particularly in the textile industry, and remains one of the largest towns in the Borders.
History & Industry
Galashiels grew significantly during the 19th and early 20th centuries due to the booming textile and wool industry. The town was known for producing high-quality tweed and other woolen products. While large-scale textile manufacturing has declined, the town still retains some links to the industry, including the Heriot-Watt University School of Textiles and Design, which continues to educate students in fashion and fabric innovation.

Galashiels benefits from good transport links. The Borders Railway, which reopened in 2015, connects the town to Edinburgh Waverley Station, making it popular with commuters. The A7 road also runs through Galashiels, linking it to Edinburgh in the north and Carlisle in the south.

The town has seen significant investment in recent years, including retail developments and the Great Tapestry of Scotland visitor centre, which opened in 2021. This museum celebrates Scotland’s history through an intricate series of embroidered panels. This is a must for your visit to the town.
